You can see the Canal drainage influence in the stained color but Canal release flows sure look more tempered in the smaller tribs then say the Oak. Flows are up and already back on the retreat all around, with dirty water color. You can also change some of your preferences. Flasher/fly and spoons are doin it but trout species are favoring spoons. There is some icing especially in downstream slow water spots and some bank ice. Here we go on a nice warm up again for more seasonal spring like temps this week. With no real winter to come out of and trib and open lake water temps all on the warmer side, who knows for sure how the steelhead gods will play things out over the next couple months?! If an angler arrives at a parking lot and there are several cars, they should consider going to another parking lot. Pier fishing continues to be the place to cast in Wayne County. Real nice flows by steelhead standards. Avoid surfaces that are touched often, such as doorknobs, handrails, and playground equipment. Theres a chance for more significant accumulations which could bring area totals to 2 3 ft of snow. This will go down as a trip of a lifetime for them as well as for us. We are generally most confident in our Oak interpretations, less so in the other area smaller tribs. So it sounds a little like an improvement from a struggle for a hook up to getting a few. This latest rain has come uncharacteristically from the east so to the west may be in slightly better shape then to the east. Fish as soon as reasonable conditions allow instead of waiting for supposed better conditions that may or may not materialize. 3 spinners to catch a fair number of smallmouth bass earlier this week. So if youre following this the moral of the story is that the weather is up and down and therefore so are the water levels and fishable conditions. Hours are 7 am till 5pm. Flows consist of lots of turbine water and overflow water that started to come back up for the end of the past weekend. This area will be on the far end of it. Water color has that swamp headwater tannic stain to it. Id say Im hearing about 50/50 in good/tough fishing. If you stayed patient and made some drifts or swings when the good flows returned by mid Apr you could be rewarded with a hungry drop back steelhead. A small crush of people at the Waterport dam, but even by those standards really not that crowded. There were bottled up Kings at the mouth of Johnson Creek that now should be spread up thru the waterway. Remember as these kings start to stage that their preferred water temps are also changing. It was so good we turned two doubles on the same rod, and caught a Coho on a meat rig that was dragging on the surface in the prop wash. Theres no significant icing anywhere that we are aware of. Its situated parallel to the Thruway so its visible from both directions. One angler for the beginning part of this week reported good action. The nuances of fish migrations is an inexact science and we cannot predict the future. So far we are prob looking at some fish from earlier higher water and new fish trickling in on medium-ish flows instead of one bigger batch of fish on a blow out event. A weak cold front coming through today will change water tempshopefully creating a better bite. We found meat was the best bait. Use white minnow rubber three inches long. Look for flows in the Oak to go from the slightly high flows we have now to med and 2 3 ft of visibility. Boat angling easily the least expensive bargain for big salmonid angling chances where you get to feel the strike and experience an honest battle without heavier trolling gear. Little to no fishing pressure because of the recent events, with the few anglers out enjoying action like this for early Apr 2020 steelhead in the Oak. Civilian small boat trollers reported to be having good brown trout action so that tells me the land lubber casting chances should be good too. Flow conditions right now are more like nice steelhead water and higher then typical fall flows. The fish were biting on a deep rigger set at 120, flasher/meat rig and wire dipsey, 280-300 out, gold 42 second paddle with mirage fly, NBK paddle mirage fly, 600 hundred copper with a Jill bill meat rig. High and stained flows gives up some fresh Oak Orchard chrome for the Licorice Man. Both kings and Cohos are being caught. If the forecast is realized with any significant rain, then flows all around could be back on the rise and going off color. More then likely flows will be on the rise in the near future and hydro managers could bump flows up beforehand in anticipation of higher run of the river flows to come. Flows in the Oak are clearing slowly and hanging in somewhere between medium and slightly high. This was a Fathers Day fishing weekend out of Bald Eagle Marina. Flows in the Oak are high with about 2 ft of visibility. In the Oak, flows are moderate and mostly clear and likewise may hold onto those fair moderate flows instead of dropping back to real low. Bass fishing in Sodus has been excellent. Weather is seasonal for now with highs in the 30sF and dropping back at night forecast thru the mid week. There were a few Monday morning oh-dark thirty hook-ups at the Oak Orchard Rivermouth. Registration is only open for KOTO at Ernsts Lake Breeze Marina. Same for estuary slow water areas on the smaller tribs where guys have had on and off action. Maybe those fish pushed further upriver as so far theres not been a lot of holding or spawning action except for the piling up at the dam. For now after the past weekend it looks like flows are back down some in the Oak to about med or slightly high and less stained. Patience and persistence on the Oak may finally be paying off. And then theres always that concentration of fish and people at the dam. Those chances should only improve with cooler weather. Lake effect rain dumped three inches of rain around the Port Bay area over the weekend. Thanks, Capt. The showers did not amount to much and there is the chance for more rain showers and wind for the end of the week. Mild winters or short duration cold weather lasting into spring is generally considered good for alewife survival, and hopefully a so far mild winter will bode well for alewife. Well be back to more seasonable temps for mid and end of week with a chance of showers Thursday. There is still plenty of snow to melt like in the woods and protected spots and some ice and flooded fields. (Highly recommended!) No serious icing yet and all the downstream frog water is open. Other area smaller tribs should be open and ice free in the upstream reaches with some lower river ice cover or jams. Reports from the rest of the downstream water or other area smaller tribs are thin thanks to the light fishing pressure. That good run of Kings in the Oak from end of last week has spread out nearest the dam, but guys are finding pods of spawning fish in the downstream fast water reaches. The other area smaller tribs have med or slightly high and stained flows. Any big steelhead this time of the year in relatively warm water are going to be a challenge to land! For now flows in the Oak are something like a notch less then medium and going clear. To the east, like at Sandy Creek, the higher Canal bolstered flows have made for better migration conditions with pods of salmon bolting from the estuary holding water and spreading upstream, along with a few browns mixed in.. Through the past weekend and beginning part of this week, guys reported a few hook-ups by either working the holes, the dam, or swinging spawning staging spots.
